In our DNA was written during the fall of 2021 and was recorded mostly on Christmas Day that year with Ian’s lead and Sascha’s bass followed up within the early months of 2022. This was one of the band’s first songs they recorded together. Matt spent this Christmas separated from family during this time due to covid and used the day he had to record both the rhythm and drums in a makeshift studio in Altoona PA. The line “Inside a place we receive love from” in the 3rd verse about summer is a reference to the festival Mass N Tha Grass, which Sascha, Matt and Ian have organized for a few consecutive years excluding 2020 which they all have performed at along with other bands and performers. The festival is a massive work of collaboration by many visual and musical artists with its aim to provide a source of culture and access to original local art in a town that is often void of the appearance of these things.
lyrics
In our DNA there was this winter
It calls us back to this path inward
The faces in these mirrors, just beginners
The places we call home, I still have splinters from.
You and I were innocent sinners, searching for a place to have some dinner
In our DNA there was this springtime
Brand new beginnings of this lifeline
There was hope in the air, tangible signs
Pushing us forward with a landslide
Instincts taking over my mind,
a reverence for the process of that crime
In our DNA there was this summer
Inside a place we receive love from
What riptides and roots have taken under us ?
With eyes covered up by cucumbers
What islands did we live on in this slumber
Ears in the music, not the numbers ?
In our DNA we took this fall
Ghosts come to haunt us, show us all of it
That harvest moon was hangin like a disco ball
Graveyards keep shooting me these phone calls
Bad jobs taking me like voodoo dolls
Winter’s coming in, our shadows so tall
In our DNA there was this winter
In our DNA there was this springtime
In our DNA there was this summer
In our DNA we took that fall.
