Death Mask was recorded over the summer of 2022 with its lyrics being written at the same time of Wild Thing’s lyrical output in the early months of 2022. The refrain was not so much even lyrics as it was a list of things Matt was using as a mantra for manifesting the focus required to meet the goal of recording an album in the midst of everything else going on. Layers of hand drums were added during the summer of 2022 followed by the band’s musical additions and collaboration in the fall.

Where thoughts have bottomed out to bodies we guide
And I’m just tryna hide the rust behind these eyes..

I’ll be doing you right, in this never ending cycle of sustaining life
While simultaneously bleeding out

In our slumber, the melodies go on forever
In the visions that we cease to remember
Symbols in the flower petals, messages brought by owls
Of alarm clocks and calendars
Commit the social sin of letting the voices in

Call it a nightmare, I hope it don’t happen again
But in the end, the nightmare was our best friend

And so we keep on in this expansion
